The Shift from Desktop to Mobile

The transition from a PC or notebook to the ‘always on’ smartphone or tablet is not primarily about the smaller, more portable, mobile device. It is rather about the fact that computing services are now available virtually wherever and whenever the user desires them. The mobile shift marks an evolutionary leap to the era of ubiquitous computing.” -Digital Clarity Group

Folks have been preaching about this “mobile shift” for a while now. I generally prefer to look at the data when ideas like these are presented.  Let’s take a look at how this “shift” is affecting us.

The data is speaking loudly.  Here are a few takeaways – if they didn’t already scream at you:

  • If you don’t have a mobile-friendly website, or a completely responsive web design, it’s time to invest in the future and get one.
  • From 2010 to 2012, mobile traffic increased 162%. Expect the trend to continue.
  • You should be MORE worried about the mobile version of your site than your desktop site by 2014.

Get er’ done.
